Labia is part of external genital

Reproduction is the means through which human beings produce off springs. It involves the mating of a male and female. The male and female reproductive systems work effectively in producing off springs after a sexual union wherein a sperm meets an egg. The male and female have their independent reproductive systems. Basically, the female reproductive system includes internal and external structures; where the labium is a part of the external reproductive system. The external reproductive structures generally constitute the genital of the woman, where its function is two fold.

The main function of the external reproductive system is that it permits sperms to enter the woman’s body. Its other function lies in protecting the internal structures of the female reproductive system from any infectious organisms. It also plays a part in the sexual stimulation of a woman; where the sensation is different for different women. The external part of the female reproductive system includes the labia, Bartholins’ glands and clitoris.


The labium is divided into two types of labia; labia majora and labia minora. The labia majora are called large lips and functions in enclosing and offering protection to the other external female reproductive organs. Structure wise, they are large and fleshy and can be compared to the scrotum of males. There are many oil and sweat secreting glands found on the labia majora; and after puberty, women find the labia majora covered with hair


The labia minora is considered to be the small lips of the female reproductive system and are rather small; at the most, 2 inches wide. The labia minora is found on the inner side of the labia majora and surrounds both the openings of the urethra and vagina. The meeting point of both the labia minora is the clitoris, which is a small and sensitive protrusion. The labia minora does not have any pubic hair, and is a horizontal piece of skin that covers the vestibule.

The clitoris can be compared to the male penis. It is also covered by a fold of skin like the penis being covered by foreskin. The clitoris is capable of becoming erect with stimulation as its tissue gets engorged with blood with sexual arousal. The labia minora does not have any pubic hair, and is a horizontal piece of skin that covers the vestibule.

Sometimes, women prefer changing the structure of their labia, for better stimulation through a procedure called labiaplasty. However, though women perform this surgery, they seldom feel comfortable talking about it. Generally, the labia of women are defined by the genetics, gravity and child birth of the woman. So some women feel that their labia are not pleasing aesthetically as they think that the labia minora are found too much below the labia majora than they really should be.


Labiaplasty is a procedure that is tolerated well by women where they get healed quickly wherein they can start sexual activity within two weeks of the operation. There is no change in the sensation the woman experiences; in fact some women say their labia become more sensitive after the procedure. The sutures used in the operation are dissolving sutures.
