Off springs in human beings are produced through reproduction. And reproduction is the consequence of the mating of the male sperm and female egg. The sperm is formed in the male reproductive system, while the egg in the female reproductive system of the female. The reproductive system of the woman comprises of both its internal and external structures. The labia minora is a part of the external part of the reproductive system, called the vulva. The purpose of the labia minora and the external female reproductive structures lies in permitting the sperm to enter the body. It also works at protecting the internal organs of the reproductive system from infectious organisms.

The labia majora is called large lips and can be compared to the scrotum of males. The labia minora are found just inside the labia majora. Labia minora are usually called small lips and are very small; up to about 2 inches wide. The labia minora surrounds the opening of the vagina and the urethra. They then meet at the clitoris, which is a small and sensitive part of the female reproductive system. The clitoris is comparable to the penis of males and is covered with skin called prepuce. The clitoris becomes erect when sexually aroused and is sensitive to stimulation. .

The size, structure and color of labia minora differ amongst women. In fact, there are some women who don’t have any labia minora at all; while there are cases of women having labia minora that are fleshy and protuberant. These differences are usually personal or genetically based. The Khoisan people have elongated labia minora that hang up to four inches past the labia majora when in standing position.


As labia minora get sexually stimulated, they become engorged with blood where there is slight swelling to be seen, and a difference in color with some darkening or reddening. Sometimes, these elongated labia minora prove to be obstructive in appearance to women. This is more so to the women involved in exotic dancing and pornography. In such situations, these women undergo a plastic surgery called labiaplasty to reshape and create new labia minora.

The structure of labia minora in women is generally affected with genetics, child birth and gravity. So women who are not pleased with their labia minora turn to labiaplasty to rectify its shape. This is a procedure that takes about 2 hours and is done precisely to preserve its normal appearance and the sensation of the labia and opening of the vagina. It is done with general anesthesia, and its healing process takes about 3-4 weeks. Sexual activities can be had after 6 weeks of labiaplasty.


There are only a few risks associated with labiaplasty that include the same risks of other surgery. This includes bleeding, scarring and infection. Antibiotics are usually prescribed prior to the procedure, and after it so that the chance of an infection is reduced. Usually a short course of antibiotics is sufficient to cure the infection. Bleeding usually occurs only if strenuous activity or intercourse is started too early after the operation.
