Kegel exercise pregnancy

Kegel exercises were developed by the gynecologist, Dr. Arnold Kegel when he found that his patients developed urine incontinence, and reduced pleasure after delivery. These exercises are performed with the intention of strengthening pelvic floor muscles that support that uro-genital tract.

BenWA Ball

One of the most popular Kegel exercise devices is the Benwa balls. Benwa balls are metal balls which are small and marble sized. These balls are usually hollow, and have a small weight that is made to roll around it. All that has to be done is to insert the Benwa balls into your vagina and squeeze. As you have something to squeeze around with the Benwa balls in your vagina, Kegel exercises become more natural.

The best way of locating pelvic floor muscles is by stopping urine flow when urinating. If this can be done easily, it means that the pelvic floor muscles have been identified, and that it is in good shape. However, if you find that it is a bit difficult, a few weeks of Kegel exercises will set things right. Pelvic floor muscles can also be located by inserting two fingers into vagina, and clenching them. An alternative to this is to clench your partner’s penis when having intercourse.

why woman need kegel

It is quite normal for the woman’s pelvic floor muscles to prepare for the baby’s delivery. However, with a weak pelvic floor, the woman may have trouble with urine leakage because the uterus grows and in the process, strains the muscles supporting the uterus and bladder. This incontinence may continue till after pregnancy because of the maximum stretching of the pelvic muscles.

Kegel help you to get a better delivery

It is always better to do Kegel exercises during pregnancy not only to prevent and treat pregnancy incontinence, but also to make birth easier. The reason for this is that once the art of exercising pelvic floor muscles is mastered, it proves to be easy to release them during delivery time. With the release of pelvic floor muscles, labor becomes more comfortable and the tearing of tissues during birth is avoided.

In addition to an easy delivery, women doing Kegel exercises experience better sensitivity during intercourse and have partners enjoying better pleasures. The greatest advantage of Kegel exercise is that it can be done anywhere, anytime you are; while on the bus, having food, and watching TV. No one will ever know you are doing Kegel exercise.

Don't over do kegel

Though Kegel exercises prove to be very beneficial for an easy delivery, it is not advised to overdo it during the first few weeks after delivery. This is because it is very likely that you will become very sore. The most you could do would be ten repetitions of Kegel exercises, twice a day.

Pregnant women also have a tendency of forming varicose veins due to rectal veins experiencing increased pressure during delivery. These varicose veins are called hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids usually occur for the first time, or become severe in pregnancy. You experience bleeding, itching and pain around the anus when suffering from hemorrhoids. However, with regular Kegel exercise, it is possible to prevent hemorrhoid formation during pregnancy. This is because Kegel exercise increases the blood flow to your rectal area.
