The world of cosmetic surgery has a division called vaginal cosmetic surgery wherein labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are two main types of procedures. It is the women having large and asymmetric labia, along with some other female genital issues that turn to labiaplasty to reduce the appearance of labia by correcting the irregularities. In the case of vaginoplasty, it is the women who have had multiple childbirths who need to tighten and enhance the sensitivity of the vagina.
There are some women who don’t like their labia minora protruding as it prove to be embarrassing for them when with their sexual partner. They tend to lose their self- esteem. Till some time back, it was only women who were in the entertaining and performing fields like swimsuit models, centerfold models and women in the sex industry. However, with the display of female genitalia more rampant with videos and magazines, labiaplasty is done for two reasons - medical and aesthetic.

The medical reasons for labiaplasty is that large labia causes irritation to women in tight pants and discomfort to those engaged in sports and other physical activities. Most women with large labia are born with it; while there are some who get it through childbirth or age. The aesthetic reasons for labiaplasty have developed through a woman’s sexual habits, expectations and wants. They turn to labiaplasty for vaginal beautification so that they look better to themselves and their sexual partner. Sometimes, older women turn to labiaplasty to regain the youthful look of their twenties.
Women develop enlarged vaginas after childbirth, more so after multiple childbirths. Even women who had delivered a large baby or have had a difficult delivery tend to get enlarged vaginas. This is because the supporting muscles and tissues of the vagina stretch and tear during childbirth and doesn’t return to its original state. And so women tend to resort to vaginoplasty to tighten and rejuvenate the vagina, perineum and its supporting muscles.

Here too, it is the increasing needs of social expectations that have increased the popularity of vaginoplasty. Today, many mothers of children turn to vaginoplasty to tighten the vaginal tissues to enjoy sex better with their partners. Sometimes, a woman may decide to have both labiaplasty and vaginoplasty performed on them to rejuvenate, tighten and beautify their vagina. The advantage of this combination surgery is that you need to go through only a single anesthesia session and can save quite a lot in procedural costs.

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that usually takes about one to two hours to perform. This is basically an outpatient operation that is done with local anesthesia. The woman may experience some mild discomfort and swelling after the surgery. This surgery usually lasts for a week or two where the labial incisions heal and disappear.

Vaginoplasty is a short procedure where the woman will be able to walk comfortably after a few days’ of the surgery. Sexual activities can be resumed after a gap of four to six weeks; depending on the case of the woman. The risks associated with these procedures are few, and are mainly those risks associated with other surgeries like infection, scarring and bleeding.
